Pat Capasso is a scrap metal processor at Pascap, one of New York’s largest metal recycling centers. He discussed the recycling business, the equipment and processes involved, and the positive environmental impact of keeping tons of materials from going into landfills. Pat gave out souvenir magnets which can be used to detect ferrous metals.
Sorry I am going to miss this Barn Night since this is right up my alley. Just to be clear, in Westchester County we don’t landfill anything, we have a Waste-to-Energy incinerator in Peekskill.
We also have a Household Material Recovery Facility in Valhalla across the street from the County Jail for all residents. You can take nearly anything you have to this facility – hazards liquids, electronic, tires, paint, solvents, metal, paper, etc and it will be either recycled or disposed of in an environmental manner. Very state of the art. Our paper/cardboard, metals, and plastic are all sold on the open market and then recycled into other products.. We earned over $6MM in the sales of our materials to the companies that truly recycle – they wouldn’t pay us then pay someone else to dispose of it. It has value.
