A panel of experts discussed how a hotel development project at the old quarry site on Marbledale Road that may pose a significant health threat to residents of Tuckahoe, Eastchester, and Bronxville. Some controversy arose as to whether it’s best to do further environmental testing or leave well enough alone.
Some things are probably best left natural. Does everything have to get paved over?
The Marbledale Quarry aka Marbledale Toxic Trench is the farthest thing from natural – that ship has sailed. The guvmint needs to do more extensive testing to determine next steps – leave it alone, pave it over, or dig it all up. It’s a sad and ugly situation – the Village just kept kicking this can down the road, nobody wanted to deal with it because it is such a mess. Now that Marriott wants to spend some of their big money to develop the site, there are some in the Village that want to use the hotel chain’s greenbacks to remediate the shithole. Others say clean it up using Marriot AND NYS DEC money. Then some are saying elevate the site to a federal Superfund site, to get the really big money. And then there are others who are saying it is probably best to just leave it alone. I only know one person who says it is natural and should be left alone.
Can we talk about this again? On September 15th, the Tuckahoe Planning Board is voting on whether or not this project should be allowed to proceed. It seems hard to believe that building without testing further is a sound idea. What, as a community, should we be doing over the next six weeks?
