What better a subject to originate a theme night, than beer. Through Joe Pregiato’s manic representation on a selection of beers, we had a condensed history/tasting/discussion of beers from around the world. The method of progression was simple: Start off with simple common flavorless beers (Coors Lite, Budweiser), and continue with a growing amount of flavor–more hops, more barley. The ‘hook’ was that all beers fall into but two catagories–ales and lagers. The progression took us through wonderful German Lagers such as Becks and St Pauli Girl, and some full bodied ales like Smithwicks English Ale and Sierra Nevada Pale ale. The quick pace made ‘nursing’ impossisble. It was a flood of flavor meant to quickly compare and appreciate many of the quality beers readily available. A special treat was a selection of growlers (1/2 gal. jugs) from a fine local micro brewery in pleasantville called Captain Lawrence. At this point it was apparent that all of Ben’s Barn Boys were enthusiastically using their new found appreciation of Beer to decide for themselves just what they enjoyed best about a good fresh brew. Sticking to the theme, we ended with a classic: The thick, creamy, almost black Irish Ale; Guiness Stoudt. And just to juxtapose where we started from, we(tried) to taste once again, the Coors lite.

Barn Night Details
Barn Nights take place monthly, always on a Friday. The barn is located behind the house at 41 Deerfield. The doors open at 8pm, so feel free to come by, grab a beer and a slice of pizza, and socialize. The presentations start at 9pm and go for about an hour. Afterwards you can hang out and jam with or listen to the Barn Band. For the die hards there’s usually a “wrap up” at around midnight where we share our thoughts on the presentation and get into deep, controversial discussions. There’s a contribution box for you to drop in a minimum of $20 to help offset the cost of the event.

According to the photo, Joe included no Canadian beer. Now I know from experience that Joe’s a smart guy, but he flubbed this one, imao.
That Canada’s beer is superior to all others may be a fact known only to Canadians, but because of our proximity and America’s love of Labatt’s Blue, we should have been included.
I thought we were friends Joe.
This really hurts. I am crying sudsy tears in my beers.
You were just trying to impress your friends with beers with funny sounding names from countries that only exist in our imaginations and on the news, weren’t you?
Here’s to a speedy recovery Mr. Pregiato.
John
I never understood all the hoopla around Canadian beer, especially Labats, its no better or worse than Bud, which as we learned at the beer tasting is a poor example of the brew.
Cheers (swigging down a Warfteiner, Dunkel, a nice german beer that follows Joe’s $1/bottle price point)
Khalil
From the beginning your blog was trash. But now it is great. I hope you gonna keep writing that way.
What a nice job done with the blog…I just wanted to thank everyone for appreciating the first ‘themed’ barn nite–Beer nite….I would certainly enjoy doing another ‘beer tasting’—only THIS time, we will try a wider representation of beers from around the world; Beers that are readily available in local stores….Let’s pick a nice hot summer Friday nite for this one….Joe
